2009 Providence Journal High School Honor Roll and Reynolds Correspondent Scholarship Recipients Announced
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - John Caruolo, a recent graduate of East Providence High School, and Laura Sogar, an Exeter resident and recent The Prout School graduate are the 2009 Providence Journal Honor Roll award winners and recipients of $5,000 Wendy's/Peter Bennett Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. Craig Stockwell, a recent graduate of Ponaganset High School, is the $5,000 Dick Reynolds High School Correspondent Scholarship recipient. There were 110 graduating high school standouts nominated by their schools for this year's awards. This is the fifth year that Wendy's and the Bennett family, lead by Wendy's franchise owner Harvey Bennett Jr., awarded two, $5,000 Wendy's/Peter Bennett Honor Roll Scholarships in memory of the late Peter Bennett and provided all nominees with Wendy's restaurant gift certificates. The Bennett family's association with The Providence Journal Honor Roll goes back to 1966 when Curt Bennett, a Cranston High School East graduate, was named the Honor Roll recipient. The annual $5,000 Dick Reynolds High School Correspondent Scholarship is given to one outstanding high school graduate who has served as a sports correspondent to The Providence Journal. The award memorializes the late Providence Journal Sports Writer Dick Reynolds through the bequest of his late sister Catherine Reynolds. Each of the three scholarship recipients receives a $500 gift certificate to Cardi's Furniture Superstores. Plus, the scholarship-award-winners' names are added to Honor Roll perpetual plaques which recognize Honor Roll male student-athletes since 1927, female student-athletes since 1977, and Reynolds correspondents since 1986. The plaques are displayed at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League headquarters on the Providence campus of Rhode Island College. About A. H. Belo Corporation A. H.
